You Too Can Now Do Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting – why exactly do you want it? You might want it for security reasons to light up dark areas of your property. Or, you may like a good outdoor atmosphere at night. Perhaps you are tired of tripping over things in the dark so you want to illuminate your paths and stairs before you injure yourself. Whatever be the reason, landscape lighting definitely works wonders for any garden. There are dozens of products available today to suit every budget and need.

One of the primary considerations is, how you would like your new landscape lighting system installed. These days, you can do it yourself with a simple starter kit. This kit contains a transformer, a photocell and timer, lamps and cables. Equipped with all of these you should be able to handle almost everything you want to do. Creativity and taste, of course, needs to be your own.

When you install your lights, you could do some uplighting, which will help with your landscape lighting. Uplighting simply means that you put the lights under the object that you want to light and direct them upwards. This gives a dramatic look to trees, fountains and even your house. For uplighting, you can also put lights underground or partially underground. This will soften the effect of the light. If you want bright lights, put in floodlights at facades, trees or ponds on your property.

For your pathways, you can use path lights that look like sculpture granite and limestone on the outside. They should blend into your garden or yard.

When you do up your landscape lighting system, you should go with a low voltage lighting system. Plug a transformer into a socket that is outside your house and then do low voltage wiring to the lights in your house. This transformer converts 120 volts to 12 volts to power the lights. Make sure that the wiring for your low voltage system is rated for outdoor use.

Whatever you decide to do with your landscape lighting system, plan it well in advance. Try and make a detailed sketch of everything that is outside your house. Next, take all necessary measurements. Now sketch your plan on graph paper. This will help you determine the best positions for your landscape lights.

When you select a landscape lighting design, you need to consider safety and security issue especially around the patio, the garden and the deck at night. You should ensure that all your outdoor areas are well lit.

In your landscape lighting design, avoid lighting that is unattractive, uncomfortable and overly bright. One way to avoid this is by focusing directly on a hard surface like a wall or the surface of the deck or patio. You should never have light beams from different lights overlapping each other. It spoils the entire effect and creates harsh ‘hot spots’.

Landscape lighting is no longer just meant for professional designed gardens. A lot of do-it-yourself kits available in the market today have ensured that even with a small budget, your garden can look professionally done up.
